FAQ
-
Can I be in the images too?
Absolutely. Some of the most meaningful portraits include the connection between you and your dog. Whether you prefer a traditional portrait or something more candid and intimate, we’ll create images that feel natural and authentic. And of course, you are never obligated to purchase or display anything you don’t love
-
What time will our session be?
Outdoor sessions are typically scheduled during the final two hours of daylight for the most flattering light. Some urban locations are better suited for morning sessions. We’ll determine the best timing based on location and your dog’s needs. Studio sessions can be scheduled between 9 am and 9 pm.
-
How do I choose a location?
During your planning call, we’ll discuss your vision, your dog’s personality, mobility considerations, and scheduling preferences. From there, I’ll recommend locations that align beautifully with your goals..
-
What if it is raining?
If the weather isn’t ideal, we simply reschedule. Your session fee transfers to the new date!
-
Who can come to the session?
Household members are welcome to participate. To keep the session calm and focused, I do ask that only those being photographed attend. If you’re interested in extended family or multiple households, we can discuss a custom session.
-
Do you photograph pets other than dogs?
Yes. While most of my clients are dogs, I also photograph cats, horses, and other companion animals.
-
My dog is super reactive to other dogs/people/bicycles. How can we do a session?
I completely understand; the world can be a scary place for all of us sometimes. If your dog is nervous or reactive, we can choose a location that suits their temperment. I have a few out-of-the-way locations that receive very little dog or foot traffic, or we can rent a private location for a small fee, ensuring that we see wonʼt see a soul.
-
My dog is full of energy! Can we still get great portraits?
Absolutely.
Sessions are designed around your dog’s natural personality — whether that means quiet moments or bursts of movement. I work with pacing, positioning, and timing to capture expressive portraits without requiring long periods of stillness.
High energy isn’t a problem. It’s personality.

What about harnesses, gentle leaders, or prong collars? can they be edited out?
Slim harnesses and standard collars are usually manageable. Bulkier harnesses or specialty equipment may require additional retouching. If needed, I recommend bringing a simple flat collar for portraits.
-
My dog doesn't know sit or stay. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Sessions are guided and never depend on perfect obedience. I work with natural movement and short moments of attention to create expressive, beautiful portraits.
-
My dog can't be off leash. Can I still do a session?
Yes. Most dogs are photographed safely on leash. Standard leashes and flat collars are removed during retouching.
-
Do you offer digital images?
Yes. Digital images are available as part of artwork collections or as standalone collections. However, the heart of the Ash & Alder experience is designing tangible artwork meant to live in your home.

Mini sessions are designed as a simple, seasonal offering. For a fully guided, artwork-focused experience, commissioned portrait sessions are recommended.
